“The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth. He doesn’t live in shrines made by human hands, and he isn’t served by people as if he needed anything. He himself gives everyone life, breath, and everything else”
“For God made Christ, who never sinned, to be the offering for our sin, so that we could be made right with God through Christ.”
2 Corinthians 5:21
God does need us but we need him. If this universal truth is denied we fail to understand the whole scope of Scriptures. God became man so that man could be saved. This is the essential truth in the Gospel. Yet our fellow Christians continue to believe that in order to fufil God’s work on earth we are needed to spead the message. We are needed to give a mission to reach the lost. While God does want us to give a good testimony for the hope in our hearts ( 1 Peter 3) and he wishes us to speak truth of his love. There is a fundamental difference how we see this.
Some would suggest that in order to fufil this mission we need to think up creative ideas to capture the attention of the lost. The truth is that this is not just about presenting a good message in a productive and effective way. Style might matter to some but for all who deny the Gospel it has more to do with sinful arrogance and unrepentance. The lost do not know they are lost. The issue is not just saying it in a cool snazzy way but rather to speak a hard truth found in the Law. It is the hard concrete truth of the Law that helps deliver us to the Gospel.
“Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. For by it the people of old received their commendation. By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible. By faith Abel offered to God a more acceptable sacrifice than Cain, through which he was commended as righteous, God commending him by accepting his gifts. And through his faith, though he died, he still speaks. By faith Enoch was taken up so that he should not see death, and he was not found, because God had taken him. Now before he was taken he was commended as having pleased God. And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him Hebrews 11:1-6
Faith is what brings us to God. It is the Holy Spirit who sources that faith. That living faith comes from wisdom beyond man. So why is seeking man’s ideas of creative messaging the answer for those well intentional Christians? Why is it seeking man’s ways that gives us wisdom which is beyond all human understanding?
The answer I am afraid is that people in their sinful nature want to be the source of Grace. We want a hand in the system. We want God to want us and need us because to live a faith in which we have little to do seems to be an issue. We think this is the reason for our decline. Yes I agree that for sinful natured folks that kind of faith for even the godliest of sinners seems less agreeble. We rather be front and center than be so radically dependent on a God who gives himself for us every Sunday.
